Misconceptions About Being Sun Smart

November 21, 2017

There are so many messages out there about being sun smart and protecting yourself from the suns harsh and damaging rays. The best one is slip, slop slap! Slip on sun protective clothing and sunglasses, slop on the sunscreen and slap on a hat. Pretty easy to remember.

However, what many people don’t realise is that with today’s harsh sun, the sunsmart items that you put on need to be specialized for the ultimate in sun protection. Given today’s sun smart ways, there are a lot of products out there which are specifically made to be sun protective. Having them is one thing but using them is another, and then again using them correctly too.

First misconception is sunglasses. All sunglasses are not equal. To really protect your eyes, it is recommended to wear a pair which are specifically UV protective as your eyes are also prone to sun damage. You will find most big brands have UV protection in their lenses and it is recommended to wear sunglasses every time you go outdoors when the UV rating is 3 or above.

Another misconception is with covering up using normal everyday clothing and thinking you are fully protected. You are, but not as much as you think. It has been said that a white t-shirt will give you about SPF 5 sun protection only. To get serious about protecting yourself in the sun, consider getting specific sun protection clothing or otherwise known as rashguards. Sun protective clothing are specially made garments which can block out up to 98% of UV rays if they are SPF 50+, and will go a long way for sun protection.

Sunscreen and application is another important area to be aware of. Most people are routinely using sunscreen these days which is great. However, another misconception is thinking that if you put sunscreen on in the morning you are protected for the whole day. Actually, this is not the case as sunscreen needs to be reapplied every 2 hours and even more frequently if you are going in and out of the water.

In today’s climate, it is becoming more important than ever to protect yourself from the UV rays which can cause serious damage. This is why at Cat&i we believe in offering a range of sun smart rashies to keep you safe and also looking good. Function and fashion are at the heart of what we design.
